About the event

Where does the dance come from—and what does it carry with it?

Roots to Routes is a 3-hour immersive workshop exploring the connections between movement, rhythm, culture, and identity across the African diaspora.

Led by guest teacher Trisha Sewell, this session offers a journey through some of the lineages that have shaped social dance as we know it today—tracing threads from West African traditions through Caribbean influences and into British cultural life.

Rather than focusing on fixed choreography, this workshop opens up space to experience how different forms and histories interconnect in the body.

You will encounter:

  • Foundational movement principles rooted in West African traditions—rhythm, grounding, improvisation, and call-and-response
